11:04 A.M.

Lifting open her heavy eyes, Paige was surprised to find herself alone in the hospital room.

When she’d woken earlier, Jack had been here. She had asked where Mark was and if something had happened to Laura, but he’d told her there was nothing to worry about and to go back to sleep. She had obeyed, not because she made a conscious decision to but because she hadn’t possessed enough strength to hold her eyes open.

Paige was tired. So tired she could barely think of anything else. Every time Elias brought the girls around, she had to force every cell in her body to function. Once they left, she usually passed out into an exhausted slumber.

She knew Mark was worried about her. She could see it in the way he looked at her. She wasn't getting better, and he couldn’t find a medical explanation for it. He wanted to fix her, but she was starting to wonder if that was even possible.

She couldn’t live any longer with the stress of knowing that her stalker and would-be murderer was still out there.

“Hey, you're awake.”

The door to her room opened and Sofia pushed a wheelchair with Laura in it inside.

“Where is everyone?” she asked, hating how faint her voice was these days.

“Jack and Mark are just outside your room. Do you need Mark?” Sofia asked.

“No,” Paige replied. There wasn't anything he could do for her anyway. “Is everything okay with Rosie?” she asked Laura. Then her eyes narrowed on Sofia’s face. Her friend had a bandage taped across her forehead. “What happened to you? Are you okay?”

“Rosie is fine,” Laura assured her. “She’s doing great. Breathing on her own, and they're feeding her breast milk with a feeding tube. They're going to be moving her out of NICU to the special care nursery this afternoon. The doctors sent me away to get some rest.”

“Then why aren’t you?”

Laura smiled at her. “Because I wanted to come and see how you’re doing.”

Paige offered up a weak smile back. “What about you?” she asked Sofia. Paige attempted to pull herself into a sitting position, but her cracked ribs protested at the movement and she winced.

“Are you all right?” Laura asked.

“Just my chest. Some ribs got cracked when Jack and Ryan were doing CPR.” She attempted to breathe through the pain, which didn’t work too well given that breathing aggravated the damaged bones. She was getting the feeling that her friends were trying to keep something from her. Something related to whatever had left Sofia with a head injury. “What happened to you?” she repeated.

“I came to visit you earlier,” Sofia somewhat reluctantly began. “Then I was supposed to meet Elias to go shopping for the things you guys need for the girls, but I was attacked in the parking garage.”

“What?” Paige bolted upright, wincing against the pain in her chest.

“Careful,” Sofia murmured, easing her back down against the mattress. “I'm okay. No concussion, just a couple of stitches to close a small gash on my head and a sprained wrist.
